New FLYER factory in Switzerland.
Biketec AG was established on December 3, 2001, adopting the activities of its former company BKTech AG and continued the production of the electro bike, the FLYER. The business focuses on design and development, manufacture, sales and distribution of the FLYER and various other innovative products relating to mobility on two-wheels.
Background – From the early days in Switzerland to today
The Flyer was developed in several stages driven by the appealing characteristics of mobility. After the prototype of the first electro bicycle, the « Roter Büffel » (engl.: Red Buffalo), covered its first laps in 1993, BKTech AG manufactured its first standard product in limited production from 1995 to 1999. The FLYER Classic:
New Flyer
After winning several business awards, the concept suddenly attracted more and more fans. Thanks to the support of innovation-minded investors, the ambitious project began: a new generation of two-wheeler mobility products that will set a new benchmark world-wide. The close cooperation with technical colleges, suppliers and government agencies allowed the development and realization of the New FLYER. Within one more year, in early spring of 2000, the dream became reality, and ever since, the FLYER has been accepted as the market standard.
Right from the start, the FLYER was a success story; however, the necessary production volume to amortize the high investment costs could not be achieved. Sadly, by the end of 2001, BKTech was forced to close its doors. However, the determined and resourceful management team orchestrated a last-minute rescue of the FLYER through a buyout and successfully took over the business activities of Biketec AG.
Biketec AG
The management team of Hans Furrer, Gianni Mazzeo and Kurt Schär emerged as the majority owners of Biketec AG.
2003: Launch of the Flyer C-Series
In 2003 Biketec launched the first electro bicycle in Europe. It is equipped with the latest lithium-ion technology – a quantum leap forward. The main focus for the bike’s design was based on the requirements of the end-user (low access, solid and reliable technology, and top-quality components). The design makes the product stand out from the crowd. Thanks to the C-Series, the FLYER model has captured a market share of 70% in Switzerland and, thus provides the base for a successful entry into the German and other markets.
